Boehmerine, a New Amide Alkaloid from Piper boehmeriaefolium var. tonkinense, and its Antidepressant Activity

  • Published:
Chemistry of Natural Compounds Aims and scope

The antidepressant potential of boehmerine, a new amide alkaloid first isolated from Piper boehmeriaefolium (Miq.) C. DC. var. tonkinense, was investigated. The forced swimming test, tail suspension test, and open field test in KM mice were used to reveal the antidepressant-like effect of boehmerine. The results indicated that a significant and dose-dependent decrease in the immobility time of the tested mice was observed after boehmerine administration in both the forced swimming test and tail suspension test, without any accompanying changes in the number of crossings and rearings compared with the control group in the open field test. The results suggest that boehmerine possessed obvious antidepressant-like effects.
