Kröhnke's salts and their ester analogs in reactions with ethoxymethylidene derivatives of CH acids

2-Bromo(chloro)-N-(2-ethoxy(methoxy)-2-oxoethyl)pyridinium halides react with (ethoxymethylidene)malononitrile and ethyl (ethoxymethylidene)cyanoacetate to afford ethyl(methyl) 2-amino-1-cyanoindolizine-3-carboxylate and ethyl(methyl) 1-cyanoindolizine- 3-carboxylate, respectively.
