Why is climate adaptation so important? What are the needs for additional research?

Abstract

Research into the needs for adaptation will continue to grow as our sophistication in how we think the myriad of issues improves. The framework here is created to help organize our thoughts about how to proceed in a world dominated by uncertainty and confounding factors.

Tony Janetos died on August 6, 2019 from pancreatic cancer. Tony was always optimistic about continued progress in our ability to identify and adapt to the impacts of climatic change. In this paper, he articulates this necessity and describes where future research efforts should focus. Tony brought a lifetime of expertise on adaptation and climate change to provide a structure within which researchers and practitioners could organize their thoughts.

Tony’s death generated an outpouring of admiration and feelings of enormous loss for the planet writ large from friends, colleagues and readers from around the world. Perhaps the most comprehensive was a thorough review of his public, professional, and private lives that was posted in Scientific American on August 22nd of this year.

We at Climatic Change felt his loss along with everyone else. He brought his wit, friendship, and intellect to us each and every time we asked him for help, and we asked frequently.

This is his sixth publication in our journal since 2003, and he has thus far been cited in 19 other articles in our pages that were authored by scholars from six continents. We all miss him deeply.
