Abstract
This paper contributes to the discussion of implementing the newly established International Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) through briefly reviewing it’s creation and reflecting on an original idea to follow a bottom-up approach of a network of networks for supporting sustainable development. It reports on the outcomes of the Second Plenary Session of IPBES in Ankara, Turkey, in December 2013. Conclusions are drawn from the implementation in Europe of Local Agenda 21 and the River Basin Management Plans of the EU Water Framework Directive as mechanisms that can promote a widely informed and integrated approach to the (especially) ecosystem assessment work programme of IPBES.
