Effects of Pulsatile Flow and Backwashing on Plasma Flow Rate in Implantable Plasmapheresis. II. Experiment

Following the theory part of a backwashing method, this paper describes details of experimental procedures proving theoretical prediction of benefits of backwashing. We utilized a cardiovascular pump to generate pulsatile flow of blood filtered by polyethersulfone (PES) membrane and compared a variety of pulsatile flows and their effects on permeate flow rate under backwash regime. Hydrodynamic features of pulsatile flow such as Womersley number, blood pressure, and mean arterial pressure were investigated. The results verified that the permeate flow rate was higher in a backwashed system compared to without backwash.
