Seismic resilience of bridges isolated with traditional and geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI)

Abstract

Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI) technique has been herein discussed for several bridge configurations in order to assess the seismic vulnerability. Comparison between traditional base isolation (BI) and GSI technique has been carried out by considering a cost assessment evaluation. The effects of soil structure interaction (SSI) were considered by performing advanced numerical simulations that consider the role of soil deformability. Overcoming most of the existing literature, this paper proposes comprehensive 3D models (soil + isolation + bridge) by performing OpenSees that implements non-linear mechanisms of the soil and may realistically assess the induced damage caused by the mutual interaction of buckling and seismic loads.
