Abstract
Thick ordered anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates can be fabricated by a two-step oxidation process. By strictly controlling temperature and voltage parameters, high-quality films 140 to 188 μm thick can be realized. Film growth was carried out in 0.3 M oxalic acid solution at temperatures between 2 and 12 °C with constant voltages of 60 or 80 V. Strict adherence to reaction parameters allows for an increase in ionic current and a controlled rate of inner oxide layer dissolution that favors pore growth and overall thicker membranes. Details on membrane synthesis are presented, and the importance of maintaining an appropriate balance between oxide layer formation and dissolution discussed.
