Abstract

For many years transmission of rotary motion and power by gears has been an important technology in many industries, such as automotive and aeronautical. Thus, a considerable number of researches have been carried out on the quality control of these components. Currently, involute profile inspections of cylindrical gears have been carried out by using CNC Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) with rotary tables and dedicated measurement software. However, many gear manufacturers, in particular those from small companies, use manual CMMs to inspect and determine the total profile deviation of spur gears. Since most manual CMMs use touch trigger probes, the inspection process of the involute gear is difficult and time-consuming compared to CNC Coordinate Measuring Machines that incorporate scanning probe. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to present an approach based on the mathematical tool Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) in order to determine the total profile deviation (Fα) of spur gears, by using manual CMM that incorporate touch trigger probe. Simulations and experimental results showed that the NURBS technique contributes to the application of manual CMMs to inspect spur gear more efficiently and effectively.
