Abstract
Pantanal is the world largest inland wetland and is internationally renowned by its high species diversity, but low level of endemism. Extensive areas of the Pantanal have never been subject to adequate sampling, and we still have much to learn about the composition and distribution of the biota found in this threatened biogeographic province. In this paper we present the results of a long term inventory conducted in Pirizal region since 1999. We recorded 343 bird species, 54.8% of them documented with specimens. A significant Amazonian influence was observed in the composition of the bird community sampled. Only two threatened species were recorded: Penelope ochrogaster and Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus. Noteworthy records include Ictinia mississippiensis, Attila phoenicurus, Empidonax alnorum, Myiothlypis leucophrys, Dolichonyx oryzivorus and Catharus fuscescens.
