Summary
Observations and a theoretical model of the short period astronomical tides of Lake Constance permit a direct evaluation of the theory of tidal generation in lakes.
In Lake Constance in contrast to larger lakes, the tidal response is static in nature. Since the astronomical tidal generating force is primarily balanced by the free surface pressure gradient, tidal flows are extremely low.
The observed amplitudes are 50% of the predicted amplitudes while the phase agrees within the error limits. The amplitude discrepancy may be due to the earth tide. Comparison of the inferred earth tide at Lake Constance with other values found in the literature suggests that local inhomogeneities in the earth's crust may influence the earth tide in lakes of the scale size of Lake Constance.
