Summary
Low levels of ampicillin, 1/4 the minimal inhibitory concentration, decrease the ability of Escherichia coli to attach to human urinary tract epithelial cells in vitro. Such adhesion may be a virulence factor inEscherichia coli producing symptomatic urinary tract infections, since strains from the urine of patients with acute pyelonephritis and acute cystitis attach more than strains from patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria or normal faecalE. coli.
