Abstract

Wood-based materials, such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and oriented strand board (OSB), are increasingly being used in a variety of applications due to their unique properties and environmental benefits. MDF is made from wood fibers that are bonded together with a synthetic resin, whereas OSB is made from wood strands that are oriented in specific directions and bonded together with an adhesive system. Both MDF and OSB are versatile and durable materials that offer a number of advantages over traditional wood products. They are also more environmentally friendly, as they can be made from recycled wood fibers, which promote the cascading usage of wood-based products thus maximizing their value and minimizing waste. Eucalyptus timber is a particularly suitable raw material for MDF and OSB production, as it has a fast growth rate, high density, and fine texture. Thus, this chapter provides an overview of the mechanical and physical attributes of Eucalyptus panels made from different timber species and various processing parameters. The factors affecting their properties are also highlighted and discussed. This chapter also covers the general manufacturing process and the applications of Eucalyptus MDF and OSB in the multiple sectors. Limitations, challenges dealing with the manufacturing and applications of eucalyptus MDF and OSB in the construction industries and the future prospect are also discussed.
