Abstract
Modern history has seen control over oceans playing a crucial role in shaping the global and regional geopolitics. The oceans over centuries have united the diverse cultures of dispersed people around the globe and connected economies of nations with varying stature and sizes. But, because of their being the lifelines for global trade and commerce—and now the world awakening to oceans being rich reserves of natural resources—they have also become bone of contention between major powers. The oceans increasingly serve as a stage for maritime rivalries, competitive explorations and scientific research, as also commercial competitiveness and cooperation driven by economic, political and strategic necessities of nations.
