Abstract
An organism that has a foreign or modified gene in its genome is called transgenic or GMO. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include microorganisms such as bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish, and mammals. The first recorded instances of production of transgenic in aquatic species are those of rainbow trout and goldfish. Since then over 35 species have been genetically engineered.
