Abstract
As a new form of education in the digital era, smart education is essentially distinct from education forms in the industrial era. This first Chapter constructs the concept framework of smart education in China with three pillars: ubiquitous and intelligent learning environment, teaching and learning adapted to individual needs, and precise and intelligent education governance. This Chapter also provides technical details of Smart Education Development Index (SEDI), including assessment background and principles, the indicator system, data collection and processing, and index calculation.
