Abstract
Due to the current pandemic of COVID-19, the educational system is required to convert conventional face-to-face instruction to online learning. This study assessed the effect of learning devices availability and internet connection capability towards online learning and the students’ view of current practice for online learning. A total of 108 Year 1 students from Civil Engineering Program, UNIMAS participated in surveys and answered quantitative and qualitative questions to highlight the challenges they experienced during their online learning. The findings showed that device availability and poor internet signal are the barriers among students who are from low-income families which give the greatest impact on the quality of their online learning. The study also found that asynchronous learning is preferred by students to reduce the gap in online learning thus benefitting the group of students affected by internet connectivity issues.
