Abstract

The author makes the case for a gender-responsive approach to climate action. She explores the linkages between climate change and gender, specifically the increased vulnerability of women to the impacts of climate change and the pivotal role that women play in climate change mitigation. She analyzes existing evidence for the benefit of designing and implementing gender-sensitive climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies while at the same time promoting gender equality to increase women’s political and civic participation. The author focuses on women’s livelihoods and strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change. She concludes with policy recommendations for national, regional, and global action to connect gender equality, women’s empowerment, and climate action to maximize women’s potential to lead in addressing climate change.
