Abstract
What problem is addressed? Healthcare systems are fragmented, and healthcare providers are not working together to provide the required integrated services. This leads to the lack of coordination and low-quality healthcare.
What was tried? Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (ICP) in which healthcare workers communicate effectively and provide a holistic healthcare for their patients is the ideal practice that improves the quality of health services and increases patients’ satisfaction. This talk provides the globally recognized definitions and the roadmap to ICP besides summarizing the six core competencies and practices that help to establish a collaborative healthcare practice. Different levels of collaboration and healthcare issues that needs collaborative practice will be discussed. Multiple strategies which can be used to prepare future healthcare workers to be an effective team member will be presented.
What lessons learned? The talk concludes with the authors’ experience about collaborative practice in Saudi Arabia by describing two success stories and their impact on students, faculty members, and patients which highlights the urgent need to implement these practices in health sciences curriculum to improve learning outcomes.
