Abstract

Although leaders are not necessary need to be managers and vice versa, however, leadership and management qualities complement each other. Both leadership and management involve influence, working with people, and working to achieve common goals. In health professional education and practice for the new century, teaching leadership and management qualities are necessary to develop leaders at all levels of studentship, to be able to work effectively as a leader in healthcare teams. Our goal in this chapter is to promote leadership and management qualities among healthcare faculty to cope with the rapidly changing global educational environment. To achieve this goal, we are proposing five objectives (initiatives) with their corresponding strategies. First initiative, is to provide forums for the exchange of ideas in educational developments. Second, to coordinate educational offerings to faculty across health sciences colleges. Third, to develop and conduct surveys for faculty staff concerning the use of up-to-date teaching methods to achieve excellence. Fourth, to provide support as well as training and modeling the use of online courses. Fifth initiative, is to promote leadership and management qualities among healthcare faculty. Rationale for developing leadership and management qualities among healthcare professionals is discussed and chapter summarized.
