Abstract

This exploratory chapter aims to explore strategies for combatting human trafficking on South African online platforms. Three (3) objectives guided this chapter, namely: To determine the processes used for human trafficking on online platforms; to identify causes of human trafficking on online platforms; to propose feasible strategies to combat human trafficking on online platforms, aided by the existing legal frameworks to respond to this scourge. Moreover, two theories formed the premise of this chapter, demarcated into the following: The Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and the Grounded Theory. The qualitative research approach was adopted, coupled with the desktop research design whereby the author used various secondary sources restricted from 2008 to 2021 to support the emerging findings. Descriptive analysis was used for data analysis. It was discovered that the advent of the Internet and the growth of social media technologies have given traffickers the opportunity to lure victims. There is rising potential to increase awareness of human trafficking. For recommendations, it is suggested that the South African government implement policies and legislation to curb the misuse of human trafficking on online platforms.
