Abstract
India and China have a demand for lots of gold and silver due to their age-old customs. Also, purchasing gold and silver is considered an investment. There is a very large market for these metals and due to the unavailability of the proper knowledge and regulation, there is a possibility of rigging in this. Therefore, there is a need for government regulations that these precious metals should be sold only after testing. For testing, one needs standard equipment to calibrate the equipment reference materials. Generally, these reference materials are costly in the international market, and therefore for ease, each nation should produce its own reference materials, which should be comparable to international standards. India has taken an initiative in this direction and registered BND (Bharatiya Nirdeshaka Dravya) as Indian reference materials. In the case of Gold, the first BND was released in collaboration with the Mint, Mumbai, and, currently, 7 BNDs have been released in association with Jalan and Company, New Delhi. This chapter describes the methods and procedures in detail.
