Abstract

When we think about aging today, it is lived in multiple ways. It is a broad and complex concept that has changed over time. In today’s society, which is becoming increasingly older, the elderly lead active lives in a context where technology plays a major role. It helps them maintain their independence and meets their daily needs. Through this, we believe that they live more meaningful lives. Research shows that traditional TV news is the elderly's most important source of information. Historically, elderly spend more time watching TV than any other mass medium and watch more TV than younger generations. By surveying a sample of Portuguese older adults through a Uses and Gratifications approach, this study aims to highlight the role that TV news content plays and understand if it helps their quality of life. By highlighting their needs and expectations for the consumption of this type of content, it intends to profile this type of TV consumer. Afterwards, and because we live in a technologically enhanced society, by teaching a sample of elderly citizens how to produce TV news content, this study wants to understand if these expectancies and gratifications persist or if they change.
