Abstract
Mid-range wireless power transfer systems show the advantages of high load-to-source efficiency and long power transfer distance. In this study, the planar circular, planar square, cylindrical, cuboid, circular-cylindrical, and square-cuboid couplers are optimized and compared using finite element simulation. To reduce the ferrite usage, the shielding scheme and ferrite layout of the cylindrical and cuboid couplers are optimized. To improve the coupling coefficient, the key size parameters of the planar circular, planar square, circular-cylindrical, and square-cuboid couplers are optimized. The impact of normalized pad height and distance-to-diameter ratio on coupling coefficient is studied. The coupling coefficients of the six typical mid-range magnetic couplers in different cases are compared. Several design rules for mid-range magnetic couplers are given.
