Abstract

In this chapter we discuss about drugs that have action against susceptible bacteria for which most of the other common antibiotics have lost their action. Most of these antibiotics such as the glycopeptide and the polypeptide groups are obtained from microbial sources. Polypeptide antibiotics are reserved as a last option for many indications due to their renal and other systemic toxicities. They are mostly used in topical formulation on skin and mucous membrane to minimize the side effects. Urinary antiseptics, namely nitrofurantoin and methanamine are time tested drugs for urinary tract infection with minimal side effects. The principles of management of sexually transmitted disease and their various clinical presentations along with the pharmacotherapy for each type are discussed finally.
