Design of Experiments for Pharmaceutical Product Development

Abstract

The experimental designs are now considered as an integral component of the systematic product development strategy. The screening exercise helps in identifying the high risk variables involved in an experiment, which are also called the screening experimental design. It is highly essential to carry out the factor screening studies for identifying the highly influential product and process parameters. Usually, the screening designs are low-resolution experimental designs which help in identifying the few important critical variables from the possible many variables. In this regard, the screening designs are highly beneficial for producing a very few number of runs and linear model fitting to provide outcomes on the basis of main effect of the factors. Some of the commonly used screening designs include fractional factorial design, Taguchi design, and Plackett–Burman design, which are very economical in time and resource economics. The present chapter provides an insight into the fundamentals of factor screening study, tools, and techniques involved in performing screening studies in pharmaceutical product development.
