Abstract
The chapter presents an inventory of select dipteran families Bombyliidae (bee flies), Conopidae (thick-headed flies), Dryomyzidae (Dryomyzid flies), Megamerinidae (Megamerinid flies), Stratiomyidae (soldier flies), Syrphidae (hover flies), and Ulidiidae (picture-winged flies) recorded from Jammu and Kashmir State. Altogether 107 valid species have been reported from the State. Family Syrphidae is the most diverse with 88 species grouped in 33 genera followed by Bombyliidae with 7 species in 6 genera. Conopidae represents 6 species belonging to 4 genera, while Stratiomyidae is represented by 3 species placed in 3 genera. Dryomyzidae, Megamerinidae, and Ulidiidae each are represented by a single species. The inventory can serve as a baseline data for undertaking future studies on dipteran fauna in Jammu and Kashmir.
