Abstract

Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke is a plant having great significance in Ayurvedic, Unani, and Chinese traditional medicines for the cure of numerous diseases. The plant is mainly exploited for its roots popularly known as kuth and costus roots. Costus root essential oil is highly valuable for use in perfumes and cosmetics. The traditional medicinal activities exhibited by the plant are now well-demonstrated and recognized via in vitro and in vivo techniques that gave a justified scientific approach to the traditional claims. There is a huge demand for S. lappa in the international market owing to its medicinal potential. The phytochemical analysis confirmed flavonoids, sesquiterpenoids, anthraquinones, etc., as the main isolates of S. lappa. Costunolide and dehydrocostus lactone, major bioactive compounds, have been used for the development of important medicines. Efforts are required to conserve this highly endangered species from being extinct at national level.
