Abstract

Disposal of solid waste in open dumpsite poses serious damage to the environment in terms of air, water, and soil pollution. The main objective of this work is to analyze the physical composition of solid waste and carry out a comprehensive laboratory study on the quality of soil in and around the open dumpsite at Malaiyadipudur near Sathyamangalam town in Erode District. Soil samples were collected at six different locations (three samples inside the dumpsite and three samples outside the dumpsite) from three different depths 1, 2, and 3 m below the ground level. The index properties of the soil samples such as grain size analysis and relative density were performed. The type of soil prevailing in and around the dumpsite was found to be poorly graded sand (SP), and the specific gravity of the soil samples collected inside the dumpsite was found to be lesser compared to those collected outside. The soil samples were water digested, and the parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, chlorides, sulfates, organic carbon, and micronutrients were analyzed. The soil samples were acid digested and analyzed for heavy metals such as copper, zinc, manganese, and iron. The concentration of heavy metals was found to be in the order of copper > iron > manganese > zinc. The study indicates that the soil is polluted due to the dumping of municipal solid waste and the application of fertilizers for agricultural activities.
