Abstract

The energy spectrum of neutrinos emitted from core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers is determined by their interactions in the decoupling region called the neutrinosphere. Strong and electromagnetic interactions between nucleons and leptons in the hot and dense neutrinosphere influence the neutrino scattering and absorption rates. This in turn alters the emergent neutrino spectra and has important implications for supernovae dynamics and nucleosynthesis and the composition of matter ejected from neutron star mergers and their nucleosynthesis yields. We provide a brief survey of neutrino interaction rates at the density and temperature of interest and discuss open questions and opportunities for future research.
