Abstract
Sleep architecture in childhood, especially rapid eye movement sleep and slow wave sleep changes with age. The changes start from unstructured during infancy to the adult-like mature form during late adolescence, parallels the maturation and development of the brain. Sleep-wake pattern is controlled by the balance of sleep homeostasis and circadian rhythm. The changes in these two processes across childhood and adolescence explain the changes in sleep duration and the rest-activity pattern during growth and development.
