Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 285 million visually impaired people in the world. There are 39 million people who are completely blind in this group. This paper attempts to tackle the challenge of detecting obstacles and simultaneously relaying them to the user in real-time. The proposed portable system helps in reducing the accidents caused due to unawareness of the surroundings of the visually impaired. The major challenges faced with the currently available systems are their bulky construction, inaccuracy, delayed response time, and high costs. Therefore, this work presents a cost-effective portable assistive system that can provide information on the surroundings in real-time to the user. The output is provided in the form of speech and haptics, which allows the device to be used by both blind or blind and deaf. The haptic works in the form of vibrational patterns according to the type of obstacle detected.
