Abstract

The FSSWed joining process is preferred as alternative for conventional joining process in automobile, aerospace, and mechanical sectors. However, dissimilar metal joints have serious drawbacks, prone to corrosion in saline water environments. Hence, corrosion characteristics of various metal joints are being explored. This chapter presents the corrosion characteristics of three welded joints: dissimilar welded joints, AA2024 similar welded joints, and AA7075 similar welded joints. Electrochemical potentiodynamic test was conducted to understand the corrosion behavior of welded joints quantitatively and the results were validated by conducting microstructural analysis. Results indicate that among the metal joints, dissimilar welded joints show slightly higher corrosion rate when compared to the other combinations of joints. The variation in corrosion rate between similar and dissimilar metal joints is very minimum which proves FSSWed joining process is suitable to alleviate corrosion-related problems in dissimilar metal joints.
