Abstract

Takayasu’s arteritis is an example of large-vessel vasculitides that has a distinct propensity of involving the aorta and its major branches. The inflammation leads to stenosis or obliteration of the vascular lumens with consequent end-organ ischemia and organ-specific symptoms. Most of the patients are young women, who present frequently with cardiovascular symptoms. This case illustrates the occurrence of TA in a child with extensive stenotic aortoarteriopathy. The disease forms the third common vasculitis in the pediatric population with a slight female predominance. It also highlights severe, progressive, and/or refractory disease with repeated flares.
