Handbook of Epoxy/Fiber Composites

Abstract

The present chapter review the recent literature on natural fiber epoxy composites with regard to chemical modifications. The major drawback with natural fibers is their incongruity with the hydrophobic matrices such as epoxy. As a result, the interfacial bonding between the fiber and the matrix is not proper to attain sufficient strength. To overcome this problem, chemical treatment of fibers is accomplished to make it least hydrophilic in nature. The latest trends in the fabrication and characterization of chemically treated natural fiber epoxy composites are discussed. Alongside, the mechanisms of different chemical modification methods have also been explained. The enhanced mechanical and tribological properties of composites were also reviewed.
