Maternal Mortality - Lessons Learnt from Autopsy

Abstract

The broad differential diagnoses of causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy also include adrenal hemorrhage. Adrenal hemorrhage is an uncommon disorder, but it can have a fatal outcome during pregnancy for both, the mother and the fetus. Cortisol levels and an MRI or a CT scan can be used to diagnose it. If left undiagnosed and untreated, it can have a fatal outcome, including IUFD and maternal mortality. Here, we report a case of a 26-year-old female who was brought dead to our hospital. She had a history of IUFD with a subsequent induced delivery at another hospital 2 days back. Retained placental tissue further led to DIC and death in this patient. Autopsy findings revealed the presence of extensive areas of hemorrhage in both the adrenal glands.
