Abstract

Inflammatory arthritis is a joint inflammation caused by an overactive immune system. It usually affects many joints throughout the body at the same time. Inflammatory arthritis is much less common than osteoarthritis, which affects most people in their later stages of life. The major types of inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloarthropathies (ankylosing spondylitis), and crystal-induced arthritis (gout and pseudogout) will be presented in this chapter.

Clinical symptoms, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging techniques, including plain radiography, ultrasonography of joints, CT, and MRI, are essential to make an accurate diagnosis. Bone scintigraphy is frequently used in the workup of patients with inflammatory arthritis, because it is not specific, but sensitive in the detection of inflammatory joint diseases.
