Abstract

This paper reviews the techniques used for in situ testing of soil shear strength. Conventional laboratory direct shear test has problems like the simulation of field conditions, particle size restriction, etc. Therefore, many researchers have tried to perform in situ testing for the shear strength of soil to get reliable results. But because of the soil’s heterogeneous nature and heavy designs of the set-up, these tests are not popular. The study will help to identify the advantages and limitations of existing in situ direct shear testing set-ups currently being used. With the help of this review, it has been concluded that there is a need for simpler and strain-controlled in situ direct shear testing on the soil.
