Abstract

Studies on Japanese Real-World Medical Data (RWMD) published online in 2018 in the fields of observational epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology were reviewed to extract problems in the Japanese RWMD analyses. 90 published studies were selected for the analysis and were classified into eight categories according to the study theme. The main reviewed items were the reported study design, database, statistical methods, and limitations. Limitations and problems in the Japanese RWMD analyses were  (1) lack of linkage among databases partly due to the absence of common identification code, (2) low quality statistical analyses in some studies, (3) potential reporting bias of JADER database on which Japanese AE analyses relied on and (4) only a few studies clearly showed their accordance to the international guidelines, such as STROBE and RECORD statements.
