Abstract

The National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) is a cornerstone regulatory document for how to build new buildings to meet society’s needs safely, quickly, and economically. However, it was never designed to be applied retroactively. While efforts continue to improve guidance for engineers, challenges are posed in the application of this document to a wide range of existing buildings. This paper discusses how the NBCC, and international standards, cover structural engineering issues on projects involving existing buildings. To meet the needs of these projects an improved knowledge base is required along with a clearly defined design process. The article provides examples to illustrate common technical problems and suggests resources that encourage selection of the appropriate analytical tools for the wide range of existing structures that could be encountered by a practicing professional.
