Abstract

Diabetes is increasing day by day worldwide, and the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy is also increasing accordingly. Diabetic neuropathy causes various symptoms (especially pain) through sensory, motor, and autonomic nervous system abnormalities, leading to severe functional deterioration and reduced quality of life. Neuropathy is the most vital risk factor for diabetic foot ulcers, neuroarthropathy, and amputation. Diabetes causes lesions of the central nervous system as well as peripheral nerves (diabetic leukoencephalopathy). In addition, there are various types of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and it can appear not only as general damage but also as local damage. The author provides essential information on the causes and pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy, and the office-based clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment necessary for outpatient treatment, focusing on the most common peripheral symmetric polyneuropathy.
