Abstract

The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the largest region of the Russian Federation with a significant spatial inequality of the comfort of living. The goal hereof was to study the living standards in the Republic’s five economic zones using the results of a comprehensive sociological survey coupled with official statistics. Scores derived from quantitative and subjective assessments differed significantly. The comfort of living was scored with adjustment for the people’s key interests as showcased by surveying the Republic’s residents on three key issues: living standards, housing security, and financial well-being. The authors rated the Republic’s five economic zones in terms of the availability of public utilities, communications, and financial well-being. The paper concludes with proposals and recommendations on making the Republic’s economic zones more comfortable to live in; the proposals are tailored for what the surveyed residents said they would like.
