Abstract

Power system harmonic is a form of electrical pollution, comprises of distorted current and voltage waveforms. In this paper, harmonic current is produced by a diode rectifier circuit connected to resistance-inductance-capacitance load. One important step in harmonic studies is to characterize and recognize harmonic generating sources. Thus, a harmonic compensation approach can be managed easily. Therefore, apart from harmonic current generation and measurement, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and the variation of RLC load, with the objective to correlate between RLC load and THD. The harmonic current generator circuit was designed, modeled and simulated using a MATLAB Simulink tool. From the simulation results, for fixed RLC load value, the obtained THD of source current is at 38.09% and system power factor of 0.796. Following the observation and analysis of THD versus RLC variation, can be concluded from the findings that harmonic current is increasing with the increment of load resistance and inductance, yet it is decreasing with the increment of load capacitance.
