Objective and Subjective Approaches Towards Analysis of Level of Service of Sidewalks

Abstract

Urban planners and designers have long held that people encounter, internalize and interpret their surroundings in complex ways. However, most of the studies on Pedestrian Level of Service (PLOS) depends on objective assessment of environmental measures. This may be due to the fact that it is difficult to capture peoples’ perceptions of their walking environment for a large sample size in a meaningful and consistent manner. More complex approaches are needed to capture pedestrians’ perceptions for PLOS assessment. Therefore, the present study tries to elicit the relationship between pedestrians’ perception of their walk environment affecting PLOS and corresponding objective assessment of the same factors and finally, measure their impact on PLOS. The result of the study proves that PLOS evaluation is comprehensive and complete when objectively and subjectively measured factors are taken together. The findings of the study will be very useful in concentrating more research into the influence of subjective factors of walking environment that affects PLOS evaluation.
