Abstract

In this chapter, we will understand how the ginormous amount of genetic information is packaged in a cell to not only be accommodated in a limited space but be functionally efficient as well. We will take a close look at DNA packaging in both bacterial and eukaryotic cells. In the eukaryotic cell, each DNA molecule undergoes structured levels of compaction, starting from the nucleosome assembly, to a solenoid and finally to a highly compacted chromosome with heterochromatic and euchromatin regions. Each eukaryotic chromosome has a distinct karyotype with its individual banding pattern. We will close with a discussion on key structural features of a chromosome and specialized chromosomes.
