Abstract
Water is the most important commodity needed by all—the animal, plant kingdoms, and above all for meeting diverse needs of the rising global population. India is a populous country. With rising population, economic and other activities, water demand for domestic and other types of consumptions is enormous. It is a challenge always for striking a balance between the demand and supply of water. This chapter attempts to make a review of water resource situation of India, its management and associated challenges, existing policies and focuses on the sustainable initiatives practiced now and a perspective to the future.
