The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Cardiovascular Medicine

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. T2DM has deleterious effects on various bodily functions including metabolism, cognition, cardiovascular system, and mental health. The present conventional line of T2DM treatment is found to be inadequate and have several side effects. Yoga is complementary and alternative medicine. Literature suggests the positive impact of yoga in T2DM patients. Yoga helps in glycemic control and hence prevents T2DM complications. These studies demonstrated the prevention of T2DM in patients with prediabetes. A growing body of data has documented the beneficial effects of yoga on cognition, cardiovascular system and mental health. A number of studies have shown the improvement in cognitive functions, cardiac disease risks such as dyslipidemia, blood pressure, and obesity in patients with T2DM. Yoga helps to reduces stress, anxiety and depression in T2DM patients. Thus, yoga is potential intervention that helps in prevention and management of T2DM.
