Abstract

Intelligent manufacturing system (IMS) is considered as the next generation of manufacturing systems, whereas it is still in its infant stage. Therefore, it is important to have. An in-depth investigation and understanding about this concept. In this study, typical manufacturing systems in the past as well as IMS are reviewed and analyzed correspondingly, which is innovatively based on a framework of business process containing design, production and marketing. The focus of each manufacturing system, especially IMS, is analyzed from a historical perspective. The steps for developing IMS in the future are predicted by summarizing the factors of conventional manufacturing systems. Finally, a highly targeted definition of IMS is proposed.
