Abstract
The intention is to approach my experience as an anthropologist and member of the São Paulo State Council for the Defense of the Historical, Archeological, Artistic and Touristic Heritage (CONDEPHAAT)—which examines, debates and deliberates over requests on cultural heritage management or registers nonmaterial heritage, demanded by citizens or suggested by the Heritage Preservation Unit. Since CONDEPHAAT has participants from several areas of study, which confers a heterogeneity on views of cultural heritage, I will emphasize the specificities related to the contributions of Brazilian Anthropology (of the City). On the one hand, I will analyze aspects of my training as an urban anthropologist and the way in which theories of heritage have been approached in this field, considering a debate that occurs mostly inside national borders, given broader characteristics of Brazilian Anthropology. On the other hand, I will emphasize the dynamics by which certain heritage demands marked by relevant sociocultural aspects can be analyzed and approved. For that, a selected number of cases will be presented (all of which I was a reporting commissioner). The main question has been how to highlight anthropologically relevant sociocultural dimensions, where participants tend to have different perceptions and goals regarding the subject.
Article translated by Cheryl Leung (doctoral candidate in the Department of Middle East, South Asia and African Studies [Mesaas], Columbia University) for Session 1—“Blurred borders of knowledge and action: Dilemmas of practice and research in the heritage-making field”—of the 2018 Association of Critical Heritage Studies (ACHS) Conference, Hangzhou, China, September 1–6, 2018. Topic partially presented at the Federal University of Bahia (Salvador, Brazil, 2017), at the State Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2016) and at the Center for Research and Education SESC-São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil, 2014).
