Abstract
Tracing the history of psychology at Calcutta University, this chapter describes the sequence of events that led to the launching of teaching of psychology at Calcutta University in 1915. The department attracted students from all parts of India, and its products provided leadership in various academic institutions. The department also facilitated professional development by launching Indian Journal of Psychology and Samiksha, establishing Indian Psychological Association and registering with the Indian Science Congress Association. Several faculty members of the department were trained in European and North American universities. Recent developments include joining Calcutta University Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CUIIPP), opening of RCI-approved M. Phil. in Clinical Psychology, participation in Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area (CPEPA), and grant of the status of Special Assistance Programme (SAP). The early concern of experimental psychology and psycho analysis has gradually expanded to include newer fields of psychology and using qualitative methods.
