Abstract
Thermal gasification of biomass is known for its valuable capabilities in decentral power station applications for cogeneration. The technology provides a large potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to the use of biogenic residuals such as waste wood for the production of electrical and thermal energy. The current development in the global energy market towards renewable energy sources enables a high potential for the application of biomass gasifiers, but still, there are economical and legal issues for a broad application of this technology. Although a large amount of cheap biogenic residuals is given in Germany, the operation of gasification plants is still rarely economical for typical operators such as farmers or foresters. This mainly results from high-maintenance costs and relatively low feed-in remunerations. This work gives an overview of the market size and development, the legal framework and economic aspects for the operation of biomass gasifiers in Germany. The current state of the art in technology, different reactor types and their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed. Additionally, the local and international potentials of solid biogenic fuels for the use in gasification plants will be given.
